New Policy Brief launched: Enhancing Blue Carbon considerations in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive

The JPI Oceans Blue Carbon Knowledge Hub, launched in January 2024 and led by Ireland with participation from Germany, Greece, Malta, Norway, Portugal and the United Kingdom, is pleased to announce the publication of its first policy brief: ‘Enhancing Blue Carbon considerations in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD)’.

A breathless ocean: Scoping a Joint Action on oxygen loss

A scoping workshop held in May 2025 brought together experts to scout a potential Joint Action on Ocean Oxygen Loss. With Poland leading the effort and several countries engaged, a concept paper is now being developed to outline priorities and possible next steps for coordinated research.

The Joint Action Ecological Aspects of Deep-Sea Mining assesses the long-term impacts of polymetallic nodule mining on the deep-sea environment.

Blue Bioeconomy
The BlueBio ERA-NET Cofund aimed to strengthen Europe’s position in the blue bioeconomy. It consisted of 30 partners from 17 countries, and launched a total of four calls funding 49 projects. Since 2024, JPI Oceans is following up the funded projects and activities.

All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance
The All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance is the result of science diplomacy efforts involving countries from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, aiming at enhancing marine research and innovation cooperation across the Atlantic anywhere between the Arctic and Antarctica.

European Ocean Observing System
The European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) framework promotes ocean observing in Europe by means of collaboration, coordination and integration among the relevant key people, institutions and facilities. JPI Oceans chairs the EOOS framework’s Resource Forum and has initiated a process to create National Charts on Ocean Observing and Monitoring in Europe.
